Trainee Detective Constable Shahzad Malik appears at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court charged with rape of woman he met on the internet

  Richmond and Twickenham Times

A trainee detective has been accused of raping a woman in police accommodation after meeting her online.

Trainee Detective Constable Shahzad Malik, a 30-year-old officer based at Hounslow police station, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with one count of rape and two of sexual assault.

Malik, smartly dressed in a pinstripe suite, striped shirt and tie, spoke only to confirm his name, age, address and acknowledge the conditions of his bail.

The alleged attack emerged on January 10 when a 27-year-old woman told police she had been raped two days earlier in Police Section House, Brentford. She alleged the attack had been carried out by a police officer she had met on the internet.

Charges were brought against Malik after the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) took control of the Metropolitan Police’s investigation.

A spokesman for Hounslow police said that with serious allegations such as this one the IPCC investigates “as a matter of course”.

He added Malik had been suspended pending the outcome of the prosecution.

Malik, of London Road, Datchet, Berkshire, was granted bail under the condition he make no attempt to contact directly or indirectly the 27-year-old woman or any potential witnesses involved in the case. He was also told not to enter Brentford Police Section House or contact staff at the lodgings.

Malik was ordered to reappear at Isleworth Crown Court on August 3.
