Ex policeman faces jail after admitting falsifying papers to beat speeding charge

Ex policeman faces jail after admitting falsifying papers to beat speeding charge
A former policeman is facing jail after admitting falsifying documents to avoid speeding fines twice, including once at Torpoint.

Jason Butler was a detective constable with Avon and Somerset Police at the time of the offences, when he claimed someone else owned and was driving the Volkswagen Sharan which was caught by speed cameras.
He told safety authorities that Walter Earl, who lived in Los Angeles, California, was behind the wheel on both occasions when the P-reg people carrier was clocked by static cameras in Dorset in 2008 and Cornwall in 2009.

At Plymouth Crown Court today he pleaded guilty to two counts of perverting the course of justice.
Judge Paul Darlow told him: “You must understand that the court will very seriously consider a custodial sentence in a case such as this.”

Butler, 45, of Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire, was caught on the A35 in Poole, Dorset, on May 24 2008, doing 40mph in a 30mph zone.

On August 11 2009 he was caught speeding on the A374 in Torpoint, Cornwall.
Both times he sent documentation showing that he was not behind the wheel and blaming the man living in the United States.

The court was not told his reason for doing so.

Defence barrister Nigel Hall told the short hearing that Butler was now suffering from depression. He resigned as a police officer on January 31 this year.

“His life has fallen apart since this offence,” Mr Hall told the court.

Judge Darlow released Butler on unconditional bail, to be sentenced on May 20.

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “Jason Butler offered his resignation to Avon and Somerset Constabulary on January 31 2011 and this was accepted.”
