Prison-police conspiracy sends five to jail

A "criminal empire" consisting of 33-year-old prisoner Robert Talbot and corrupt prison staff and police officers was brought to justice this week with six convictions, five of which included jail sentences.

The Metropolitan Police Service reveals that Talbot succeeded in bringing a member of police staff, a police officer and a prison officer into his circle of crime, dealing in drugs and luxury cars from the relative safety of his cell at HM Wandsworth.

Police Constable Hayley Cloud of the Metropolitan Police Service was persuaded to act as the outside arm of the empire, running background checks on luxury cars Talbot wanted to sell on.
She was jailed in June 2010 for two years, while Talbot and three others received their sentences on Wednesday (March 23rd).

The sentences included five and a half years for Ian Cooper, the HM Wandsworth officer who smuggled drugs and mobile phones into the prison for Talbot.

Robert Talbot himself received a new 12-year sentence for his part in organising and profiting from the crime ring.

According to the Metropolitan Police Service's stated values, "there is no greater priority" than delivering quality policing.
